BPD Publications Committee Meeting
March 6, 2008
1:15-2:30
PM
Present:
M. Daley (Chair), N. Poe, C. Williams, V. Williams, B. Pierce, P. Twiss, G.
Hull
Meeting convened at 1:20
due to some difficulties for members in finding the room.
Member introduced
themselves and the chair apologized that no membership list was available. The list of committee attendees
would be forwarded to the BPD President and their interest in the Committee noted.
V.
Williams indicated that BPD was in transition and that more information would be forthcoming.
G.
Hull discussed the JBSW Journal. He indicated that the JBSW Editor was not always kept in
the loop on Board decisions. His term as JBSW Editor expires in 4 months and a replacement needs
to be named. The transition of the Journal from Lyceum to CSWE publications has gone relatively smoothly
but that communications between the Editor and CSWE are not as smooth as they had been before the transition.
The JBSW will now be indexed in Psych Info.
C. Williams discussed
the BPD Update. The next issue will contain committee reports, some articles with the theme of social
justice, and an article on small & rural programs. After the spring issue the BPD Update is
in limbo. Her understanding is that the Board only wants committee reports and factual pieces, and no articles.
If this is the case, she may not continue as Editor. She would like to add thematic articles on
topics like EPAS, Unification, and restructuring CSWE. She has received conflicting messages about what
is wanted for BPD Update.
R. Vernon who manages the BPD web page could not attend
the committee meeting due to another meeting conflict. The chair indicated that discussions with Vernon
suggested that Vernon was not aware of Board plans to move the web page from IUPUI and there
needs to be some communication on this point.
The discussion shifted
to the listserv (which is also managed by R. Vernon) and which, if any BPD committee is responsible for it. It
appeared that this is not assigned and may need to be assigned to a committee (Publications would be a logical choice).
There were concerns about the recent flood of “me too” emails to in boxes.
The
Committee shifted to a discussion of EPAS II. There was general agreement that CSWE is very tardy in getting
this information to members as some had received recent revisions only a day before they left for BPD. Also
the core competencies are not well defined and several key terms are vague.
Re:
Unification – the Committee believed that this was moving too fast and that perhaps CSWE was pressing too hard too fast.
There was a fear that the interests of BSW program would be lost especially in terms of other issues re: EPAS II and
restructuring CSWE. The Committee did it was good to speak with one voice, for the profession.
Re:
Restructuring CSWE – the Committee believed that the current restructuring plan would cause CSWE to lose its democratic
structure and create an “us vs. them” mentality between the Board & members. The Committee
was against the plan as proposed.
The Committee adjourned at 2:30 PM.
