Technology and Distance Education Committee

Members of the Technology and Distance Education Committee presented a number of sessions at the 2008 BPD conference and APM on topics including online classroom resources, plagiarism and new technology innovations for enhancing classroom presentations.  The committee continues to meet regularly at both the APM and BPD conferences and online in the interim.

Marshall Smith and Goutham Menon have created a new interface at
http://www.esocialwork.net/ housing the National Social Work Distance Education Course Catalog.  This site cosponsored by University of Texas @ San Antonio, the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and the BPD technology committee can serve as a repository for much of the excellent content generated by the BPD listserv and is currently collecting information specifically on distance education offerings nationwide.  Plans are being made to begin organizing study abroad options in a similar manner in collaboration with the BPD International Committee.  Inquiries regarding this new initiative can be sent to smithml@hawaii.edu

Future topics for conference presentations include assistive technology and using technology for teaching values and ethics.  The committee continues to explore the use of simulations for classroom instruction and distance collaboration and plans to conduct its first fully online meeting in Second Life later this year.

The committee continues to summarize and incorporate recommendations gathered from its conference presentations and the BPD listserv as well as monitoring several other technology and human service related lists to keep abreast of technology issues relevant to BSW education.

Additional suggestions or requests for future conference topics can be sent to
berghoef@ferris.edu or any the technology committee member.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael Berghoef
