Report from Midwest Meeting

The first question that came up was which states were considered to be in the Midwest region.  For the purposes of this meeting, we assumed that anyone identifying as being part of the Midwest and attending the meeting would be considered as part of the Midwest while in the meeting.

The Midwest
Conference needs a host for the fall if we are to have a meeting.  Michigan was the last state to host and about 300 people attended.  There was speculation that it might be Iowa’s turn but no one was sure.  There is about $1000 in the fund for start up money.

Craig Mosher from Luther College in Iowa encouraged anyone interested in the Social Work Committee on Sustainability and Environmental Justice to contact him.

We identified issues we are facing and some strategies we are using in the Midwest:

·        Demand for BSW social workers

·        Recruitment and retention of social work students

o       High school fairs – in Michigan using current students to talk about what social work is

o       Marketing discussion in a recent issue of BPD Update

o       Intro course as part of the general education options available to undergraduates

o       Use super instructors for the intro courses

o       Provide a welcoming environment for students of color – particularly Latino students

§         Hiring adjunct faculty from Latino backgrounds

§         Having a bilingual Student Services Coordinator

·        Need Midwest listserv to provide relevant information for our area – we are in the process of trying to get that organized

·        Social work education conferences should focus on these big issues

o       Economy, veterans, housing

o       Electronic communication

·        Why don’t we play together more instead of being competitive?

o       Field trips to visit one another

o       State meetings

o       NASW – get it to be more responsive

o       Engage other professional organizations

o       Use the listserv to advertise our own conferences

o       Collaborating together more within the organization
