Advocacy and Outreach Committee
Committee Minutes

The following Committee minutes gives an update on BPD's relationship and involvement with IASWR, ANSWER, ISP, and the BPD Summer Policy Fellow for 2002.

IASWR continues to strengthen its program through the leadership of Executive Director Joan Zlotnik. IASWR continues its efforts to advocate for the advancement and strengthening of research funding opportunities at the BSW level and to continue its efforts to build linkage between research and BSW education and practice. BPD's presence on the Board is evident with Spencer Zeiger (President) as the official BPD representative, Mit Joyner as Treasurer, and Jack Sellers as Vice President with both of them now serving on the IASWR Executive Committee.

Regarding ANSWER, the National Center for Social Work Research legislation has again been reintroduced in the House (HR 3814) and the Senate (SB 70). Social Work educators must continue to support this legislation through their respective members of congress.

The BPD Summer Policy Fellow Award was successful again in the summer, 2002. Delene Porter, a BSW student from the University of Georgia, was selected from fourteen applicants. She presented at the Pittsburgh Conference on her experiences as the Summer Policy Fellow. A request was approved to fund the third BPD Summer Policy Fellow for summer, 2003.

The Annual Influencing State Policy (ISP) contest for 2003 is open to enrolled social work students, faculty, and field instructors from accredited programs. Deadlines for entries for 2003 and information on application procedures are on ISP website at:

The Committee will be continuing its efforts to tie the committee to specific parts of the 2002-2004 strategic plan. Further committee discussion and action regarding the Strategic Plan will continue to be on future Committee meeting agendas.
