Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors
Membership Committee
Minutes of the October 25, 2002, meeting
BPD Annual Conference
Pittsburgh, PA

The Membership Committee met in the Byham Room, 11:30-1:30 P.M.
Members present: Linda Moore, Sally Alonzo Bell, C.J. Hicks, Harry Macy, Joel Ambelang.
Also attending: Stacy Barrentine and Wanda Katinszky.

The Committee reviewed its membership. One member is to be the board liaison and one member is to be a member of the nominations committee. These members, plus a member from the Northeast Region (Region 6), are vacant at this time.

It was discussed and recommended that members of the committee serve three year terms with a rotation of four each year.

It was discussed and recommended that the Membership designation on the application forms remain AInstitutional Membership.@ This facilitates the willingness of institutions to cover the cost of membership in BPD.

The Committee discussed the BPD conference exhibit and its portability and ease of use. The committee passed this recommendation on to the Board for a possible redesign.

After reviewing and discussing Stacy Barrentine=s proposal, it is recommended that this proposal for membership processing and retention be accepted. The Committee recognizes her significant contribution to the efficiency of registration at this conference as evidence of the quality of her services. Continuity and efficiency in maintaining a centralized membership database is crucial for accurate and current membership information and membership processing.

The Committee requested that the $620.00 cut from its budget be restored. The Chair of the Membership Committee is to submit rationale for that request to Virginia Cruz by Saturday morning, October 26, 2002.

The Committee recommends that a single membership category of full membership be approved, thus eliminating the associate membership. This change would acknowledge the reality of an already existing parity between full and associate members. It would enfranchise associates and provide simplified access to leadership positions. It would increase the yield of membership dues providing an improved financial base for BPD.

Wanda Katinszky made recommendations to the membership committee based upon her experience with BPD membership issues. She recommended that BPD consider a student membership category; that there be no proration of dues based upon the time left in the membership year; that BPD develop a brochure; and, that there be a membership card or letter acknowledging receipt of dues and membership for a specific year. The committee took these recommendations under advisement.
