Minutes of the International Committee of BPD
October 26, 2002, Pittsburgh

The International Committee of BPD met at the conference in Pittsburgh, on October 26. 2002. In attendance were Barr Mickey, Julia Guevara, Dennis Ritchie, Jan Hockensmith, and Margaret Oakes. During the meeting the committee discussed plans for the board sponsored international presentation in Reno, which is to be three hours in length.

After some discussion the committee decided that the presentation will focus on actual international experiences of different sites. There will be a sampling of international programs in a variety of countries through audio visual presentations,, with written material to include syllabi and recruiting material, criteria for selection, and course requirements. These programs will include travel study tours and practicums. Music will accompany power point presentations. The committee plans to have a student who has participated in the program present their experience, which will provide an emotional journey through the program. As the committee has limited funds, Julie agreed to bring a portable LCD and computer with an extension cord. By 2/1/03 the panel will be composed. The committee discussed student exchanges and obstacles for such as a possibility for inclusion in the presentation.

Although the concept of a simultaneous poster presentations was discussed, it was decided that this needed to be a separate presentation due to the time allotment. The committee also encouraged committee members to submit separate proposals so that an international presence would be greater at the conference. The committee will attempt to orchestrate a variety of international submissions. It was decided that, if possible, there should be a separate session on faculty Fulbright grants abroad. The committee decided to recruit new membership through the BPD leadership surveys collected at the conference. This will be collected before the APM.

The Website will require between $300 - 500 to be maintained. Links to and from the BPD will be assured, as only one way is available at the present. It will also include links to the clearinghouse information network, the BPD, Dick Estes' Penn website, and other social work international resources. The Website will include syllabi of study abroad courses and other internationally focused courses. The committee also proposed the idea of an international listserve.

The committee wanted to propose a special issue of the BPD Journal with an international focus and to solicit articles on that focus. This probably would be in approximately two years. Linda Moore of the University of Arkansas will be contacted.

Tasks decided upon included Dennis and Jan to write up proposal for presentation, which should be ready by 2/11/03. Julie and Barrie will coordinate the power point presentation, show and tell, and collection of literature. Julie is to inform the board that we will need the full three hours for the presentation. She will also be pulling new information from the survey. Barry is to put syllabi and materials on the BPD listserve and the international website. He will have the syllabi by the APM conference. Julie is to find out about the Update piece, and have it on the Website. Steve Anderson and Steve Marsen will be contacted for help with WEB issues. Margaret is to discuss with Ralph Holkum about the Spring issues focusing on international student articles and find out specifics on it. Julie is to speak on the update piece.
