BPDers Play a Role in APM's Media Technology Center

By Carol J. Williams, Associate Editor
caroljwilliams@worldnet.att.net

BPD will be well represented in the APM Media Tech
Center's programming this year. Administered by Carol
J. Williams, the Associate Editor of BPD Update, the
Tech Center will have a variety of presentations
designed to assist social work educators in integrating
technology into the classroom.

FDI'S

Presenting FDI's on the day before the conference
begins will be: Jerry Finn and Steve Marson with a
workshop on developing a field education database;
Debra Gohagan and Michael Wright with a workshop
on Web Page Development; and Diane Falk with
workshop on Practice - all members of BPD's
Committee on Information Technology in Social Work
Education.

LAB SESSIONS

In the APM Media Tech Lab, which runs "hands on"
sessions throughout the APM, there will once again be
a number of presentations by BPDers. One
presentation which is particularly noteworthy is the
following, which includes a three week presession
course leading up to APM:

ELECTRONIC TOOLBOX PROGRAMS LAB

Web-based Course Enhancement: Electronic Toolbox
Programs - Dr. Michael Berghoef (Ferris State
University), Dr. Dennis Cogswell (Radford University),
Ms. Debra Fromm Faria, CSW, ACSW (Rochester
Institute of Technology), Dr. Marshall Smith (Rochester
Institute of Technology)

This workshop will look at instructional design issues,
web-based instructional technologies and related
software programs widely available to social work
educators. These will focus on two electronic toolbox
programs, WebCT and Blackboard's CourseInfo, and
the many features that can be used to enhance a
classroom-based course.

The workshop will begin on-line three weeks before the
Dallas APM. Registration for the workshop is a three
step process:
(1) Persons planning to register for the workshop
should e-mail Dennis Cogswell at:
(dcogswel@runet.edu) informing the workshop leaders
of your interest. Each potential participant, up to 20
total, will then be given a Web
address, a login identification, and a password.
(2) During the first week of the on-line workshop portion,
participants will indicate their interest and availability by
participating in an on-line chatroom session and/or
electronic bulletin board posting. Those participants will
then be admitted to the "At APM" session where
participants will be able to actually use some of the
features of WebCT to develop materials or plan use of a
function in a course they will be teaching.
(3) registration for CSWE APM will finalize the process.

Throughout the three weeks on-line workshop session,
there will be many opportunities to experience the
many features of the toolbox programs from the
"student" or "learner" perspective.

These will include use of on-line course outlines,
course content sections (visual and audio), assignment
dropboxes, course calendars, student presentation
features and the communication process of in-course
e-mail, electronic bulletin boards and chat rooms. The
in-person session at APM will be from the
instructor/developer view.

Lab session are limited to 16 participants, with two
participants sharing a computer for a true hands on
experience. There will be sign-up lists at the Media
Tech Center for each lab session (with the exception of
the above workshop, which requires advance
registration), so come to the Tech Center early and
reserve your seat!

OTHER MEDIA TECH LAB SESSIONS

In addition to the above workshop, BPDers will also
present a workshop on "Tekkie Tips", Jerry Finn will
present a workshop on online practice ethical and
liability issues; Carol Williams will present a workshop
on Teaching a Web Enhanced Course in Community
Organizing; and Steve Marson and Marshall Smith will
present mini-sessions on converting files to HTML.

All Media Tech Lab sessions are limited to 16
participants, with two participants sharing a computer
for a tru hands on experience. there will be sign-up lists
at the Media Tech Center for each lab session (with the
exception of the above workshop, which requires
advance registration), so come to the Tech Center early
and reserve your seat!

Be sure to visit your fellow BPDers at the Media Tech
Center when you come to APM!
