Maha N. Younes

University of Nebraska-Kearney

As a baccalaureate program director at a public institution, I am keenly aware of the never-ending challenges, limited resources, and the inadequate supports that confront social work directors and programs. After fourteen years in social work education, which includes the last two years as a Program Director, I am in awe at the resilience of social work programs and the devotion of directors and faculty.  As a BPD member for the last two years, I am grateful for the positive peer group that it has provided, the sense of empowerment that I walk away with every time I attend a BPD conference, and the wonderful listserv that is always a great source of information.

As a BPD board member, I will bring a fresh multicultural perspective that promotes BPD's continued success.  I believe that programs need more support and direction in dealing with recruitment and retention issues, faculty shortage, professional image and visibility, and preserving programs in the midst of institutional cuts.  Being a Program Director is burdensome, and I would foster the growth and success of BPD's newly established mentoring program for new directors.

BPD is a critical support system for social work directors and faculty.  Its role is becoming increasingly critical as our programs and profession face an uncertain but also promising future.  It would be my privilege to serve on the board and to work with all of you.

Kim-Anne Perkins

University of Maine, Presque Isle

Kim-Anne Perkins is Associate Professor and Director of the BSW Program at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She is a 14th generation Maine native who earned her MSW degree from Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington. As President of the Maine chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, Kim-Anne helped facilitate the creation and acceptance of a new policy statement entitled “Rural Social Work”.  A member of BPD since 1992, she currently serves on two committees - the Advocacy/Outreach Committee as well as the Committee on Disability and Persons with Disabilities.

"As the developer and Director of a small BSW program on a rural college campus, I would represent a significant constituency of BPD in a member-at-large role. My career in social work education has provided me with experience and appreciation for collaboration.  As a member of BPD, I have been energized by the collaborative efforts of this organization to promote professional social work.  Efforts of this organization, in my opinion, reflect the efforts of the membership.  I am committed to the responsibility of working with the BPD to continue to pursue to relevant issues and concerns of the membership.  As an organization, I believe our focus needs to be in the identification and maintenance of the unique niche BSW education fills in social work education.  Our issues and perspective needs to be present at all factions of policy and practice discussion pertaining to the social work profession.
