Mark Lynch

Saint Francis University

I find my strengths to be similar to most of the people I meet at BPD.  I’m very concerned about the nature and progress of BSW education.  I would like to help find leaders for BPD that have the same concerns.  I have always been an extremely hard worker, and be somewhat compulsive about making things effective.  I believe that a person helping to identify leaders of the future for BPD have to share these characteristics.  I have presented at BPD annual meetings and have been a presider on some occasions.

I believe that the social work field is definitely benefiting from technology.  I have tried to keep in the forefront of some of the newer methods to teach the courses important to us all.  I also believe we need to develop an emphasis in our programs regarding accountability to consumers, students and society as a whole.  We can no longer have a narrow view of the profession, but need a global view.  With technology, we can have access to this global view.

I would also like to participate in research designed to improve our teaching methods, not just to determine if what we do is adequate for our students.

Marlene Belew Huff

Eastern Kentucky University

Currently, I serve as the Chair of the Nominating Committee for the Kentucky Statewide Advisory Council of the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation.  In this position, I have networked with social work and rehabilitation professionals in ensuring that individuals with disabilities have a voice in the life planning process.  I understand the dynamics of committee work and the importance of recruiting the most qualified and dedicated leaders to the organization.

At the state level, I have held numerous leadership positions including the President of the Fayette County Court Appointed Special Advocates for children, the President of the Statewide Advisory Council of the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation as well as serving as the chair of NLIC (Bluegrass Region) for the Kentucky National Association of Social Workers.

Although I have over 20 years of experience in Social Work, I have only been a member of BPD since 2002.  A leadership position in BPD will allow me the opportunity to work for the profession at a national level and continue to create positive differences in social work education.

As a person with a disability, I have also joined the Disability Committee with aspirations of increasing the membership of BPD among persons with disabilities.

I have participated in every facet of social work education.  I have served a field instructor to many students who now work across the country.  I have also held the positions of adjunct faculty (in both Sociology and Social Work), assistant professor, social work consultant and, now, associate professor and director of the entire program.  I have been an active member of the Clinical Social Work Society, the National Association of Social Workers and the National Rehabilitation Association.

I hope to serve BPD in a leadership position for many years.  I am dedicated to the professional integrity of the organization and the larger role that it plays in establishing the direction of social work practice in the future.
