Committee on Disability and Persons with Disabilities Report

Diane Strock-Lynskey & Marquessa Brown, co-chairs

The BPD Committee on Disability and Persons with Disabilities was established in January of 2000. During the remainder of 2000 and the spring and summer of 2001, the Co-Chairs of the Committee, Diane Strock-Lynskey from Siena College and Marquessa Brown from Gallaudet University, worked to finalize the mission statement and to develop goals for this Committee. Extensive feedback was also provided on EPAS, in collaboration with the CSWE Commission on Disability and Persons with Disabilities.

The mission of this committee is to serve as an advisory body on matters pertaining to disability and persons with disability to the BPD Board of Directors, committees and membership-at-large. Committee goals are as follows: (1) To offer consultation and assistance related to matters of disability and persons with disabilities at all levels of social work education and specifically in relation to the B.S.W. level. (2) To provide leadership in furthering the development of the B.S.W. Education curriculum as it pertains to disability and the experiences of persons with disabilities through utilizing a strengths perspective that portrays individuals with a disability from a diversity perspective while also incorporating the significance of disability from a cultural and populations-at-risk framework. (3) To identify and advocate with the BPD Board of Directors and Committees for the development and/or revision of policy-related statements, procedures, and activities within academe and Social Work Education to ensure full inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities. (4) To actively promote initiatives and activities that will serve to more effectively integrate the social, political and economic issues of disability within the framework of B.S.W. Education. (5) To assist BPD leadership and membership in developing and implementing recruitment, outreach and organizational development strategies that may be used to actively support faculty and students with disabilities to become more active participants BSW. Educators and (7) To advise the BPD Program/ Conference Committees on matters pertaining to disability and conference planning such as the inclusion of workshops, papers, presentations, and speakers related to disability and other matters such as accessibility and accommodations.
